Your Cruise Itinerary - The Rhine & Moselle

Day 1: Amsterdam

Travel to Amsterdam where you will be met and transferred to your cruise ship. Meet your crew at a welcome reception. (D)

Day 2: Amsterdam

There is no better way to see Amsterdam than by canal boat, cruising along elegant grachten lined by stately homes dating back to Amsterdam’s ‘Golden Age’. There’s free time in the city this afternoon. (B,L,D)

Day 3: Cologne

One of Germany’s largest cities and capital of the Rhineland, Cologne straddles both sides of the Rhine, and is known for its soaring, twin-steepled gothic cathedral. The Old Town abounds with cafés, shops, and taverns. Be sure to try a Kölsch pale lager, locally brewed in Cologne for over a hundred years. (B,L,D)

Day 4: Koblenz

At the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, 2,000-year old Koblenz is the cultural and business centre of the Middle Rhine region. Join a local guide for a walking tour of the city, which reveals an eventful past; or visit nearby Sayn Manor House. Cruise the wide, peaceful curves of the Moselle Valley, famed for its beautiful, tranquil scenery and wine-growing. (B,L,D)

Day 5: Bernkastel

A guided walk of Bernkastel includes the beautiful marketplace with its renaissance-style Town Hall, built in 1608, and the ‘pointed house’, built in 1416. Wine growers in this area look after Germany’s largest expanse of vineyards. (B,L,D)

Day 6: Thionville

The choice is yours. Join an excursion to Metz, a city with a rich history, or an excursion to a nearby area of the Maginot Line, which stretched from Switzerland to the Belgian border. (B,L,D)

Day 7: Remich - Excursion to Luxembourg City - Grevenmacher and Trier

Luxembourg City was a place of strategic military significance throughout history; the first fortifications were built as early as the 10th century. The city centre occupies a picturesque site, perched high on precipitous cliffs that drop into narrow valleys. A local guide will acquaint you with the city. At the head of the Moselle Valley is Trier, Germany’s oldest city. Many Roman remnants have survived, including a 20,000-seat amphitheatre, the Porta Nigra - the only surviving fortified gate from the original Roman settlement, and the Roman Bridge - Germany’s oldest bridge with stone pilings dating from 144-152 AD. (B,L,D)

Day 8: Beilstein - Excursion to Eltz Castle

Free time to explore the quaint town of Beilstein. Visit medieval Eltz Castle, still owned today by a branch of the family who lived there in the 12th century. (B,L,D)

Day 9: Rhine Gorge - Rüdesheim

Cruise the dramatic Rhine Gorge, one of Europe’s most beautiful stretches of river, and cruise past the legendary Lorelei rock. In Rüdesheim, visit Siegfried’s Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum to see and hear a large collection of self-playing calliopes and music boxes from the 18th to early 20th centuries. (B,L,D)

Day 10: Excursion to Heidelberg

An excursion takes you to Heidelberg, home to the oldest university in Germany. Visit the imposing ruins of Heidelberg Castle one of the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps. You’ll also see the famed Great Vat, the ‘World’s Largest Wine Barrel’. (B,L,D)

Day 11: Strasbourg

On the border of France and Germany, Strasbourg is the capital of the Alsace region. Sights include the Gothic Cathedral, the lovely Petite France district, Place Kléber, and Place Gutenberg with its statue of the inventor of the printing press. An optional excursion to the Alsace wine region is available. (B,L,D)

Day 12: Breisach. Excursion to the Black Forest

Located at the foot of Kaiserstuhl Mountain on the French-German border, Breisach is the gateway to Germany’s Black Forest region, an area of unrivalled natural beauty. (B,L,D)

No-fly holidays

We know that flying isn’t for everyone. That’s why we have a wide range of cruises that give you the option of travelling by rail. Depart from London’s St Pancras International station, or Ebbsfleet if available, and you could be in Paris in just over two hours.

Tailor your travel

On an Avalon river cruise, you have the freedom to tailor your holiday as you wish.
• Pre- and post-holiday hotel stays
Why not extend your holiday with extra hotel nights before and/or at the end of your holiday? We work with renowned names in the hotel business, such as Hilton and InterContinental.
• Too many hotel nights?
Some of our holidays include hotel stays. If that doesn’t suit you, we can just book the cruise portion for you.
• Make your own way
Our brochure prices include flights, but you don’t have to take our package. We give you the option to book the holiday without the flights.
• Under your own arrangements
If you’d like to explore at your own pace after your holiday with us, we’ll happily extend your flights for you.

Note: Eurostar travel from St Pancras or Ebbsfleet is available on the following river cruises: Paris to Normandy, Burgundy & Provence, Tulips of Northern Holland, Tulip Time, Grand France, Paris, Moselle & The Rhine.
